BACKGROUND
Seed Mothers Only
My name is Jose-Jacobo Yanez aka The Lorax, and I have had the privilege of being born and raised in sunny So. Cal. Both sides of my family came here from Mexico. Back when my family still lived in Mexico my Grandfather had my uncles and father working a ranch, growing, corn, grains, tomato, alfalfa, and nopales (cactus) along with various agricultural products such as goat meat and milk. However, this is not the only family that has its culture rooted in farming for there are several other families with farm land. All of which place emphasis on growing plants. Even further back my Great Grandmother was full blooded Raramuri Indian, whose culture is focused on nature, specifically sustainably living in harmony with the land. The Raramuri and my family history have greatly inspired me my entire life to seek out an education in which these fundamentals create a partnership with scientific approaches.
As soon as I was able to identify the science part of any curriculum I have always shown extreme interest. I am now a Environmental Science Major as well as a Math and Science Major and also have my A.A. in Liberal Arts. I am presently pursuing higher learning and plan on getting my doctorate in environmental science with an emphasis on ethnobotonany. My course work includes; horticulture, soil science, botany, chemistry, plant identification, geographic information systems (GIS), geography, sustainable resource development, and my favorite ecology and biology. I have also been a part of several revegetation programs\efforts thru Victor Valley College in such environments as the forest of Big Bear, to the desert springs in Zzyzzx National Park, or planting plants on the unique Island of Catalina. These opportunities helped me educate myself about many facets of horticulture. The most valuable education I received with relevance to Seed Mothers Only was that from two biology courses, Bio 250. This was a field biology course held in Malaysia, Borneo, Sumatra, Singapore, and The Amazon Jungle! This course work carried great weight that taught the importance of the roll that plants play in our lives as well as the proportion and effect the culture have that stewards the according environment.
There are obviously, very many uses for plants. I have studied they’re uses by various cultures, and found that often those that are stewards of the local land have at the very least a verbal y shared knowledge of “what works”. The accurate knowledge is acquired thru first hand observations. Unfortunately I had a parent teach me thru observations I made thru out his battle with Cancer. He taught me that the homeopathic use of medicinal marijuana can bring a person various degrees of health; medicinal marijuana can bring relief from pain, and suffering. I find a beautiful fact among this painfully insightful moment, the fact that for almost every environment on earth if allowed one can produce marijuana there for its beneficial qualities. With this knowledge I was able to help a sick parent and only wish to do the same for anyone.
